Statement from McHenry County First Assistant State’s Attorney Randi Freese

Apr 24, 2024

I am making these remarks on the heels of the announcement made by our McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally, to no longer seek re-election and to withdraw as the Republican Party nominee.  I have been honored to work for State’s Attorney Kenneally, and I look forward to continuing to work with him through the end of November when his current term expires.

I am fortunate to have had two great mentors as a prosecutor.  The other was Lou Bianchi, who hired me at the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s office fresh out of law school and upon completion of my internship there.  I believe he saw in me the qualities that would make me not only a solid prosecutor but also a true public servant.

While he worked through his decision, State’s Attorney Kenneally consulted with me as he carefully considered its ramifications.  One of the concerns that he shared with me was whether there was someone who could both excel at the job and who wanted it.  I appreciate that he expressed the confidence in my ability to fulfill this role, and that, in turn, encouraged me to step forward and seek the Republican Party nomination and have my name on the ballot November 5th.

I love my job as a prosecutor and always have.  In fact, my internship and my entire legal career have been in one place:  the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s office.  I have worked in the courtrooms in McHenry County for over a decade and a half, and every day has brought a new challenge and a new motivation.  I am looking forward now to the process of seeking the support of our dedicated Republican Precinct Committeepersons, those men and women in the political trenches who are the tip of the spear in the battle of ideas.

I am new to politics but am a fast learner.  I am fortunate to embark on this course with the support of my mentor, Patrick Kenneally.  A critical partnership in law enforcement exists between the State’s Attorney’s office and the Sheriff’s office.  I am proud to have the support of our Sheriff, Robb Tadelman.  Together, we shall continue to ensure that McHenry County and its citizens are safe.

As a candidate for countywide office, I am thankful for the support of County Board Chairman Mike Buehler, County Clerk Joe Tirio, and other elected officials and leaders in the community.  Their support is heartening, and I shall do my level best to earn it every day.

To the voters of McHenry County, I pledge my unequivocal support for your public safety and the safety of our county.  Our founding fathers listed among our most sacred rights, those to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.  As your State’s Attorney, I shall make sure that all of your rights are secure, that rule by law is preserved, and that justice is served.

Thank you for the opportunity.
